HISTORY

The Korea Institute of Atmospheric Prediction Systems (KIAPS) is a government funded non-profit research and development institute located in Seoul, South Korea. The KIAPS was founded at the year 2011 by the Korea Meteorological Administration(KMA) which is KIAPS’ main sponsor.

The major mission of the KIAPS is developing a next generation global model (KIAPS Integrated Model, KIM) for the KMA to be served as an operational purpose. The beta version of the KIM is released at July 2015 and it is currently running on semi-realtime basis in the KMA's supercomputer. The main components of the KIM system, such as data assimilation, model dynamic and physics, are designed and coded by the KIAPS staffs using own technology. For example, the non-hydrostatic dynamic core and the 3DVAR system on a cubed sphere grid system are developed for the first time in the world by KIAPS.

KIAPS’s R&D teams consist of established researchers as well as young scientists from academia and industry at home and abroad. The researchers at KIAPS are actively involved in the local and international research communities by research papers and reports in the field of atmospheric sciences, applied mathematics, and computer sciences. KIAPS is diligently engaged to foster the manpower and build science capacity to develop, operate, and validate the new NWP system and to stimulate the NWP research.

KIAPS also has been making on-going efforts to establish international research network, and is closely working with world renowned organizations in NWP and atmospheric modeling. As a part of the efforts to stimulate the cooperative relationship with the NWP research community, KIAPS annually hosts international symposiums and workshops and also regularly conducts educational seminars and trainings as well as scientist exchange programs.

The development of the prospective NWP model is expected to provide more accurate weather forecasts for better preparedness for natural disasters, which eventually will lead to socio-economic contributions.
