Introduction

The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) commissions the Korea Institute of Atmospheric Prediction Systems (KIAPS) to undertake a research program in modeling and data assimilation, to meet KMA priorities in contributing to the Korean numerical weather prediction (NWP) capability. The model developed by KIAPS will be implemented at the KMA supercomputer for weather forecasting.
The current project in KIAPS is to develop a next-generation model and data assimilation based on the already built-in Korean Integrated Model (KIM) with cubed sphere dynamic core and hybrid 4dEnVar, which is now in operation at KMA. The performance of KIM is comparable to those of the advanced NWP centers.
The project aims at developing a unified framework for a seamless prediction from very short range (∼6 hours) to extended medium range (∼30 days), coupled with various earth system components including land surface, ocean, and sea ice.
